That Lecture

On my way to school
Staring at the brakelights of an Acura
Mother behind the wheel, speedometer
Speeding.
She speaks
I don't have that long on this Earth
What will you do without us?
Stay in school
Or you'll end up like us
Don't be like your brothers
Or even your sister
Be a trendsetter
You are independent
You can be whatever you want
Don't bring a baby here
Or you'll carry it on your hip everywhere you go
Stay young as long as you can
You have a lifetime to do what you want
We are depending on you
I was zoned out
What?
We pull into the parking lot of MASE
I step onto the hard gravel
Rocks crackling under the weight of the pressure
My mind drifts as the car pulls off
